Definition of Acceess Point Antenna

Many people are asking questions, why is the access point there have antenna. But also there is the question asked, there is also access of pointy that do not have the antenna. The answer is simple because in concept access point that does not has a antenna though also has an antenna but antenna placed in the box sometimes access point instead of outside. The Access point that does not have the antenna is usually aimed at the beauty room, as rooms attractions and hotels.
The usefulness of the antenna is deliberately created by the vendor are as media receiver and data transmissions. Basically a network administartor must understand how the workings of an access point, starting from the preparation of the transmission of radio signals that are used to get process identification device access point with the client device such as a laptop, PDA, and so on. One of the properties of radio waves is Ricochet when the radio wave on hard objects that are around him, it is the same as with the flashlight in navigate to purmakaan glass, must be bounced.
Wireless adapter in the device the recipient client will radiate the radio wave in all directions generally, except should be replaced with specific sectoral antennas such as antenna, grid and so on. Radio waves will spread where mana, and consequently will occur, for example, there is Ricochet Ricochet waves directly to the access point, there is exposed lights, glass, wall walls before reaching the access point. Due to the bounce this is the Access point will get the same signal from different directions and in a different time. This event was called with Multipath.
Basically an antenna access point are half duplex, meaning that it can only send and receive at one time, and cannot send and receive at the same time. With the antenna, the quality of the acceptance and delivery will be better. Basically the access point is to have one, two, three and more antenna, the number of antenna is usually depends on how sensitive the device access point to use. With the existence of antenea in access point wireless network quality will increase dramatically as a whole.

The company had great success with FarmVille, FishVille, mafia wars and several other games on Facebook.

The flow of red ink of GroupOn is even deeper. GroupOn for his introduction on the stock market on Thursday reported that 413 million dollars in the year 2010 lost and lost nearly 114 million in the first quarter of 2011. Investors seemed to these figures, with pent-up demand for tech IPOs. The website with a value of 9 billion dollars in its debut, leaving more than doubled shares of LinkedIn (LNKD). Commerce is somewhat since stabilised but actions are still well above the IPO price of $ 45 for LinkedIn.

How Zynga makes money: Zynga could more successfully, as it is "in a completely different category", Hargil said that most of his colleagues. He is of the opinion that the freedom is a whopping $ 17 million in a cash society per month. "This is one of the companies to the rapid growth in history, in all areas," says Hargil. "Zynga is not your default Internet bubble companies." No four years many companies have large margins growth and income. »

Apple Injects New iMacs With Thunder and Lightning

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) on Tuesday released new editions of its all-in-one iMac desktop computers.

These all have quad-core Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) Core i-5 processors, the recently announced Thunderbolt port technology, integrated memory controllers, new media engines, AMD (NYSE: AMD) Radeon HD graphics processors and a FaceTime HD cameras.

The new iMacs come in two sizes: 21.5-inch or 27-inch screens.

Prices range from US$1,200 to $2,000 depending on screen size and configuration. The new iMacs are available now at Apple's online and brick-and-mortar stores as well as from authorized Apple resellers.

Tech Details of the iMacs

The 21.5- and 27-inch iMacs are available in two configurations each.

The base 21.5-inch iMac has a 2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, an AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics processor and a 500GB hard drive. It's priced at $1,200.

The other 21.5-inch iMac has a 2.7GHz Intel Core i5 processor, an AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics processor and a 1TB hard drive. Price: $1,500.

Moving up in size, the lower-end 27-inch iMac has a 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, an AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics processor and a 1TB hard drive. Price is $1,700.

For the top-of-the-line 27-inch iMac, which has a 3.1GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, an AMD Radeon HD 6970M graphics processor and a 1TB hard drive, the pricing is $2,000.
Making Flippy Floppy With AMD and Nvidia

The new models bring some new hardware names to the table. Why not use Nvidia (Nasdaq: NVDA) graphics processors?

"Apple's been swopping back and forth between AMD and Nvidia every three or four years, and that keeps the competition going between the two manufacturers," Carl Howe, director of anywhere consumer research at the Yankee Group, told MacNewsWorld. "Their model is to buy the best one, and 'best' is left undefined, so it depends on how they define it."

Options for the new iMacs include faster Intel Core i7 processors rated at up to 3.4GHz, additional hard drive capacity going up to 2TB, a 256GB solid state drive, additional DDR3 memory, and the ubiquitous AppleCare Protection Plan.

The Intel processors all have integrated memory controllers.
Power to the Graphics

Apple claims to have built a new media engine for high-performance video encoding and decoding into the new iMacs, but didn't give any details.

"There's a built-in feature in the Mac OS that uses the graphics processor for offloading the main processor, so I'm wondering if that's what they're talking about with mention of the new media engine," the Yankee Group's Howe said.

The combination of the new media engine and the AMD graphics processors let the new iMacs deliver up to three times the performance of their immediate predecessors, Apple claims.

So, is Apple repositioning the new iMacs as fun machines, like iPads on steroids, and moving away from offering them for office use?

"Apple's intent has always been to make every product that it builds and markets a fun product, whether it's for consumer or corporate use," Laura DiDio, principal at ITIC, told MacNewsWorld. "ITIC survey data shows that about 85 percent of Apple device owners indicate they employ their devices, whether they're iPhones, iPads, iPods or MacBook laptops, for both personal and business use."

Apple did not respond to requests for comment by press time.
Thundering Great Connectivity

The new iMacs are the first desktop computers to include the Thunderbolt I/O technology jointly developed by Intel and Apple. That sounds impressive -- but Apple had, in February, delivered new MacBook Pros incorporating Thunderbolt ports, so essentially this is a continuation of its move to the new technology.

Thunderbolt uses two protocols: PCI Express for data transfer and DisplayPort for displays. The technology's compatible with existing DisplayPort displays and adapters. It also works with existing adapters for HDMI, DVI and VGA displays.

Thunderbolt devices let users daisy-chain up to six peripherals with electrical or optical cables.

"There's another thing you get with the new iMac," the Yankee Group's Howe pointed out. "The high end has two Thunderbolt ports, which means you can natively hook up three monitors."
Is There a Market for iMacs?

The move toward mobility has seen a massive shift in computer sales.

"Desktops in general are being undermined by laptops, particularly with the new MacBook Pros, which have about the same performance as the old Mac Pro desktops, which had eight cores," the Yankee Group's Howe said.

Meanwhile, it's been widely reported that laptop and notebook sales have been undercut by sales of the iPad.

However, there may be hope for the iMac yet.

"The iMac is an all-in-one product, so it appeals to people in the PC market," ITIC's DiDio suggested. "After Apple refreshed it last year, they saw an almost 24 percent sequential quarterly growth."

Further, the overall market for desktop devices appears to be picking up.

PC sales grew 4 percent year over year in March according to figures from NPD, Barclays Capital analyst Ben Reitzes told investors in a note recently, pointing out that this is the first positive growth rate for PCs since October. These figures exclude sales of iPads.

The pickup in PC sales will likely continue throughout 2011, Reitzes forecast.

"The two value propositions for desktops is big screens and lots of storage capacity," Howe stated.

"You can't get 27 inches of real estate on a laptop, for example. And in terms of storage capacity, you can get both a solid-state and a garden variety disk drives together preconfigured on the new iMac."

Most likely it will - can be confusing, Sony may take some time to get rid of piracy cases.

A Fine Financial App Once You Clear the Setup Hurdle

HomeBank is a personal financial management application that's a lot like keeping a ledger. This banking tool does not dwell in the realm of accounting techie talk. Instead, it is easy to enter money you spend and track money you deposit. Installing is easy, but the setup process can get quite tedious. However, once you're finished, it's benefits become clear.
Keeping track of personal and business finances is one of the most essential tasks I do daily on my computer besides researching and writing about the Linux platform. Lately I am assigning much more of that task to HomeBank to keep my banking transactions in order.

Do not confuse this personal accounting system with a banking institution of the same name, based in Martinsville, Ind. HomeBank, the Linux app, dates back to the 1995 Amiga computers. HomeBank, the banking community, has evolved since 1885 and has no connection beyond its name to the open source personal accounts manager, which is available in 50 languages on the GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows, MacOSX platforms. It is based on GTK2.

I mentioned the HomeBank app last year in a quick comparison of personal finance tools for Linux. Since then, I have expanded my familiarity with the HomeBank package. It is a much better solution for personal finance management than the Linux leading GNUCash and Skrooge. It also competes with KMyMoney and Grisbi.

What makes HomeBank a more-preferred app for me? It is not bogged down in the double-entry accounting procedures that GNUCash uses. Thus, HomeBank's learning curve is much less steep. It also offers a bevy of transaction filters, graphs and reporting tools to help me more easily analyze my finances in detail. Skrooge is a prettier app to use. But it lacks a lot of the reporting finesse available in Homebank's Feb. 24 release of version 4.4.
Not Perfect

I would rave more loudly about HomeBank if it had an easier setup routine. The process takes time to configure the accounts -- double the time involved if you use it to manage multiple accounts involving both income and expenses.

The setup issue is much like the proverbial glass being half empty or half full. HomeBank is very adaptable to individual needs. But it takes time to tweak it your way. The program lacks the ability to completely import banking records from other program exports. It also is devoid of pick-and-choose menuing options to populate account with transaction categories. You have to do these tasks manually.

HomeBank also cannot connect update banking records in real time. I can live without the ability to access my banking transactions from within the program. That weakness, though, could be a deal-killer for you.

This also means that you cannot use HomeBank to directly schedule monthly bill payments. But online banking via a bank's website is an acceptable alternative that I prefer.
Good Stuff

Despite its awkward setup routine, HomeBank has numerous benefits. For example, it is easy to get and install without the hassles of manual installation. You can find packages in the leading distro repositories. These include Fedora, Mandriva, openSUSE and Ubuntu.

Its small footprint makes its the default choice in memory-resident distros such as Puppy Linux. This is a big deal for me. I dual boot into both Ubuntu and Puppy Linux on my full range of desktop, laptop and netbook computers. But so far, I haven't found a HomeBank version for my Android-based tablet.

Unlike other accountant-strength banking apps, using HomeBank is a lot like keeping a ledger. This banking tool does not dwell in the realm of accounting techie talk. Instead, it is easy to enter money you spend and track money you deposit.

The numerous features in HomeBank let me stop tracking in a spreadsheet my business income sources. The flexibility in creating categories and reports lets me do that money managing in HomeBank.
Using It

HomeBank is based on two key bookkeeping concepts. Under the Accounts portion of HomeBank, you enter transactions resulting from savings and checking activities. The second concept is transaction tracking. Each withdrawal and deposit event creates a tracking ledger record of sorts.

This is where the laborious setup process pays off. You have to create a list of people and companies that send you money and that get your payments. You can skip some of the specific payee details. But then you get less of an overview of your financial picture.

Details you will not want to ignore include categories that describe each transaction you enter. For example, you can manage recurring transactions, like those dreaded monthly bills, by listing them as an archived item for payment at a specified time. Do this through the Edit / Archives menu. This archive feature also doubles as transaction templates. For instance, create a new transaction and automatically fill out the necessary fields by selecting an appropriate archive.
Data Done

HomeBank saves your data in a wallet file. This is a two-step process. In step one you create a new wallet with File/New and then fill it with accounts, payees and categories.

You can also add some optional details, much like a properties panel for a file. But doing so just adds to the setup overhead.

In step two you add accounts with Edit / Accounts and press the Add button. Then enter a descriptive name and the account number and the bank's name.

You can make this portion part of the program's budget analysis function by clicking the check box. Do not forget to enter the account's balance. A neat feature lets you add an authorized overdraft amount the program can monitor. Do this for each bank account you want to manager.

Follow a similar process to add payees with Edit / Payees and the Add button. Choose the categories and create subcategories that fit your spending patterns. You can make categories for various income sources. Just check the Income box.
Budget Watchdog

I especially like HomeBank's budget-watching capability. Using the Edit / Budget menu option, I can list my budget for various categories. I can set spending limits for a full year or monitor my spending monthly.

Another nifty feature in HomeBank is its ability to handle reporting and charting capabilities. For instance, I can easily take reports about my financial statistics, budget and overdrawn status. This is quick and simple. Select the Reports menu or press the appropriate button in the main toolbar.

The Statistics Report breaks down my transactions by category and type. It also filters my transactions by specific criteria as well as shows them as a bar or pie chart.

The Budget report shows me a bar chart overview of my budget. I can also narrow the results to a specific period of time. The Overdrawn Report analyzes my balance during a set time span as a line chart.

A special Car Costs feature is available. But it takes more manual set up to use. The advantage is an added tool to analyze car-specific costs and fuel consumption.
Bottom Line

HomeBank is well worth the time you spend configuring the account details. Its interface is starkly simple. Yet it provides a powerhouse of reporting and monitoring options.

The main drawback is its limited import and export capability. For instance, it can import data only in OFX/QFX/CSV formats. Exports are limited to the QIF format. Another limitation is only being able to export payees and categories but not full accounts. This makes switching from one financial app to another a bit cumbersome.

Run Your Own Geek Squad Style Tech-Support Business from Home

It's Screen Recording Like You Have Never Seen Before. Try Free!

computer-help-online Are you an expert in Microsoft Excel ? Do you know how to remove spyware from a PC ? Can you configure Gmail in Outlook ? If you are an expert in solving computer and software related problems, here's an opportunity to turn your hobby into a real business something like Geek Squad.

The difference is that while Geek Squad "agents" physically visit the client's place to offer computer related services, you can provide tech support over the Internet to even overseas clients from the convenience of your home.

tech-support-ratecard That's all possible through CrossLoop, a Windows based screen sharing software that helps you connect to any other computer via the web.

CrossLoop today introduced an online "Help Marketplace" which is like a directory of techies and software experts like you who are willing to help others for a fee - the rates are determined by you and CrossLoop keeps some share.

technician-profileThink of CrossLoop as an eLance for finding tech support professionals over the Internet.

Other than the expertise, your profile has ratings given by actual customers so that makes it really easy for clients to shortlist the right person.

Best of all, customers can limit their search for technicians to a city so if the problem cannot be solved over the internet (like a hard disk crash or system not booting), he or she can pay a visit just like the Geek Squad agent though the price here will be much less.

Mac users will be disappointed again because CrossLoop client is only available for Windows.

You have other alternative like Ether or Skype Prime though these services only let you charge clients for the time you spent on the phone, you still need a screen sharing app (like Yuuguu) for connecting to the client's computer.

Microsoft collects locations of Windows phone users

Like Apple and Google, Microsoft collects records of the physical locations of customers who use its mobile operating system. Windows Phone 7, supported by manufacturers including Dell, HTC, LG, Nokia, and Samsung, transmits to Microsoft a miniature data dump including a unique device ID, details about nearby Wi-Fi networks, and the phone's GPS-derived exact latitude and longitude.

A Microsoft representative was not immediately able to answer questions that CNET posed this afternoon, including how long the location histories are stored and how frequently the phone's coordinates are transmitted over the Internet. Windows Phone currently claims about a 6 percent market share but, according to IDC, will capture about 21 percent by 2015 thanks to Microsoft's partnership with Nokia.

Microsoft does say, however, that location histories are not saved directly on the device. That's different from Apple's practice of recording the locations of visible cell towers on iPhone and iPad devices, which can result in more than a year's worth of data being quietly logged. Google's approach, by contrast, records only the last few dozen locations on Android phones.

The privacy practices of mobile software companies have come under extensive scrutiny after a researcher at a conference last week in Santa Clara, Calif., described in detail how the iPhone's location logging works. A CNET report, however, showed that law enforcement and forensics analysts had been aware of and relied on the undocumented feature since at least last year.

Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) today asked Google and Apple to appear at a Senate hearing scheduled for May 10, and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has asked for a meeting. A lawsuit seeking class action status was filed today in Tampa, Fla.

According to a Web page in the "Help and How-To" section of the Windows Phone site, Microsoft has assembled a database with the "location of certain mobile cell towers and Wi-Fi access points" so a mobile device can determine its location more quickly, and with less battery drain, than if only GPS was used. Relying exclusively on GPS would have a negative "impact on mobile phone users by increasing data charges and draining the battery," the company says.

To make applications like maps work, of course, it's necessary for a smartphone or tablet to transmit its GPS coordinates to a remote server--and, in exchange, receive nearby restaurant reviews, or driving directions, and so on.

Privacy concerns begin to arise when a unique device ID is transmitted, which allows a company to track a customer's whereabouts over an extended period of time. Randomizing the device ID frequently would alleviate some concerns. (Microsoft says that in the case of Windows Phone 7, location information is transmitted to its servers only if Wi-Fi and location services are turned on. It also points out it offers a global switch to turn off all location-based services.)

"The user is identifiable if you have a series of events" that can be linked together, says Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington, D.C.

Microsoft says its operating system transmits the MAC address of the Wi-Fi access point (but not the name), signal strength, a randomly generated unique device ID retained for an unspecified limited period of time, and, if GPS is turned on, the precise location and direction and speed of travel. That happens when the "application or user makes a request for location information," the company says.

One privacy concern is that location databases can be a gold mine for police or civil litigants: requesting cell phone location information from wireless carriers has become a staple of criminal investigations, often without search warrants being sought. It's not clear how often legal requests for these records have been sent to Microsoft, which said it could not immediately answer that question, or whether its lawyers require a search warrant signed by a judge.

Even though police are tapping into the locations of mobile phones thousands of times a year by contacting AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and other mobile carriers, the legal ground rules remain unclear, and federal privacy laws written a generation ago are ambiguous at best. The Obama Justice Department has claimed that no warrant is required for historical location information, a claim opposed by a coalition of companies including Google and Microsoft but not Apple. (CNET was the first to report on warrantless cell tracking in 2005.)

Apple acknowledged (PDF) to Congress last year that "cell tower and Wi-Fi access point information" is "intermittently" collected and "transmitted to Apple" every 12 hours, but has declined to elaborate. Google has confirmed that it collects location information from Android devices, but downplayed concerns about privacy by saying the information is not "traceable to a specific user." It has yet to respond to questions from last Friday.

Here are the questions, still unanswered, that CNET posed to Microsoft this afternoon:

- When did Microsoft start collecting location data from mobile devices?
- Does Microsoft collect cell tower data?
- How frequently do devices running Windows Phone 7 transmit the data to Microsoft? Every 15 minutes? Hourly? Daily?
- How is that done? Is it an HTTP POST request to a Microsoft.com server, like Google?
- Is the connection encrypted? If so, using what method?
- What information, exactly, is transmitted?
- You say the information collected includes a "randomly generated unique device ID." Is that device ID ever changed? If it is changed, how often does it change?
- What does Microsoft use the database of Wi-Fi access points for? Because you collect "direction and speed" if GPS is available, is it used for traffic data?
- You say the WiFi access points are surveyed when "the user has allowed a particular application to access location services and the application requests location information." If WiFi is turned on, location services have been activated, but no apps are ever run, will location data ever be transmitted to Microsoft?
- You say the randomly generated ID is "retained for a limited period." How long is that? Is the ID then deleted or only partially anonymized?
- Given a street address or pair of GPS coordinates, is Microsoft able to produce the location logs associated with that generated ID, if legally required to do so?
- Given a generated ID, is Microsoft able to produce the complete location logs associated with it, if legally required to do so?
- Given a MAC address of an access point, is Microsoft able to produce the generated IDs and location data associated with it, if legally required to do so?
- How many law enforcement requests or forms of compulsory process have you received for access to any portion of this database?
- If Microsoft knows that a Hotmail user is connecting from a home network IP address every evening, it would be trivial to link that with an Windows phone's device ID that also connects via that IP address. Does Microsoft do that?
- Is any information about current or previously-visited locations stored on a Windows Phone 7 device?
- Is Microsoft planning to change any of its policies regarding location data storage and transmission?

But instead, only a black model appeared. Apple has delayed the launch of the white iPhone repeatedly, to general disappointment.

News that the white iPhone may be in production at long last has generated some excitement among Apple watchers.

It's going to be available this spring, Philip Schiller, Apple senior vice president of worldwide marketing, tweeted Wednesday.

On Thursday, Reuters reported that the white iPhone 4 would likely be available next month. That set off a flurry of speculation.

Why the excitement? We've had the iPhone 4 for what, nearly a year now? So why should the possibility of getting the device in white get everyone all energized?
On the Side of the Angels

"Overall, white would appear to me to be a color that evokes some pleasantness," James Quesada, a professor of anthropology at San Francisco State University, told MacNewsWorld. "We project all kinds of virtues onto the color white," Quesada added.

"I think the color white gives the impression of efficiency, cleanliness, that you have a no-muss-no-fuss, good, solid product that you can trust," suggested Amy Wax, president of IACC-NA, the International Association of Color Consultants North America.

"It goes back to white having a good connotation, the connotation of being safe," Wax told MacNewsWorld. "You get a feeling that you're working with a safe product, something you can rely on, something that's safe and clean and streamlined, and something that's appealing from the technical aspect."

Clean and safe, yes. Doctors' gowns are white, we have white knights, and we use the phrase "white as snow" to describe something that's really clean.

Good connotations -- check. Ever notice how we think unicorns, those magical creatures that can only be tamed by virgins, are white? And white lies are OK because they're uttered with good intentions.
Whiteness Is a State of Mind

On the other hand, the storm troopers in Star Wars wore white, and when people are terrified, we say they're white as ghosts.

Then there is Moby Dick, the focus of Captain Ahab's madness; the great white shark, which wreaked havoc in the movie "Jaws"; and, of course, there are ghosts which, although they're white, are not generally regarded as benign.

"On the one hand, whiteness could be considered powerful, more modern and efficient; on the other, it's associated with colonialism," SFSU's Quesada pointed out. "In many societies, such as Papua New Guinea, where people are very dark skinned, they often associate whiteness with their ancestors, or with spirits or ghosts," he added.

In other words, the impact of a color depends on its context.
Color Isn't Just for Kooks

Color, the IACC-NA contends, can have a profound psychological and physiological impact on the human experience and, in particular, on users of the built environment.

Color affects our brain waves, the functions of the autonomic nervous system, and hormonal activity, the IACC-NA states. It also arouses definite emotional and aesthetic associations.

Yep, emotional associations. That may account for the excitement around the fabled iPhone 4.

Apple is one of the very few high-tech companies that offer products in white. Why is this?

"I'm sure they did a lot of market research before settling on that color," SFSU's Quesada opined.

Perhaps Apple did. According to the IACC-NA, again, color is a powerful communicator because of its symbolic, associative, attention-drawing and mood-creating effects.

Color can communicate the nature of a product -- its effectiveness -- or present the image of the trustworthiness of a service.

So, what has Apple got to say?

The company didn't respond to a request for comment by press time.

youtube live channels

YouTube Friday started hosting live streams. But don't go looking for how to get your basement version of Wayne's World on the internet just yet: For now, this power is reserved for pre-approved "trusted partners," not for the kitten-on-the-keyboard masses.

YouTube isn't saying just how many live casters it will enable from day one but that it intends "to provide thousands of partners with the capability to live stream from their channels in the months ahead." It's clear from the new YouTube Live page that there is more than enough to get the ball rolling with quantity and variety.

An especially nice touch? You can add an upcoming live stream to your calendar.

YouTube has hosted a little number of "event" live streams, but this is the first time it is getting into territory pioneered by such players as uStream, Qik and Justin.tv. Unlike these services, however, there is no mobile functionality for YouTube streamers yet, so nothing will come from smartphones or tablets.

Limiting participants, requiring a certain kind of encoder and keeping it out of the mobile space are all part of what Google says in an attempt to ensure a level of quality. But it will also help minimize the chances of "Chatroulette moments" for a service which, despite the vast volume of material it accepts and hosts, still studiously tries to keep NSFW material off its site.

Facebook Opens Door to New Data Center, Invites the World In

Facebook prefer to extend the idea of community sharing and collaboration to the hardware space, and it's starting with its own new data center, built with a slew of green tech innovations. All of the specs and designs for the center are available online at the Open Compute Project, which Facebook intends to be a hub for exchanging ideas that could trigger energy-efficiency improvements.
Facebook launched the Open Compute Project Thursday in a move that might reshape the IT hardware industry.

The project offers for public use tech specs and data about the custom-engineered technology developed for Facebook's first dedicated data center in Prineville, Ore.

That technology has increased the energy efficiency in the data center by 38 percent while slashing costs by 24 percent, Facebook claims.

The tech specs and mechanical CAD files for the data center's servers, power supplies, server racks, battery backup systems and building design are available at the Open Compute website.

"Overall, what we've done is figured out just one way to do large-scale computing affordably and efficiently, with a particular focus on developing solutions that accommodate our limited resources -- both money and people -- and our unwillingness to sacrifice computing power and efficiency," Facebook spokesperson Jonny Thaw told TechNewsWorld.
That sharing of information will be good for companies with mega-data centers such as Facebook, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) and Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO), said Jim McGregor, chief technology strategist at In-Stat.

"In a lot of cases, people with very large data centers, like Yahoo, Facebook and Google, have to get custom-built solutions that meet their needs at a reasonable price point," McGregor told TechNewsWorld.

"Facebook's move is a push to say these large data centers need stuff more suited to their requirements in a more standardized way," he added.

"Given Facebook's needs are likely similar to what most companies will want when it comes to client-focused cloud computing, the result is likely better solutions sooner," noted Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group.

"Facebook becomes an excellent lab where you can go and see what is, and what is not, working today," Enderle told TechNewsWorld.
Open Compute Server Specs

The Open Compute Project servers have a chassis designed to accommodate a custom motherboard and power supply. It doesn't use screws; it uses quick-release components. The motherboard snaps into place in mounting holes, and the chassis has snap-in rails for the hard drives to slide into the drive bay.

The chassis is designed for easy servicing; it has no sharp corners, no logos or stickers, no front panel and no paint. This saves about six pounds of material per server, according to Facebook's estimates.

Facebook uses motherboards from AMD (NYSE: AMD) and Intel (Nasdaq: INTC).

The AMD motherboard is a dual AMD Opteron 61 series socket motherboard with 24 DIMM (double inline memory module) slots. The Intel motherboard is a dual Intel Xeon 5500 or 5600 socket motherboard with 18 DIMM slots.

Both are power-optimized, barebones motherboards that lack many of the features found in traditional boards.

Open Compute uses a 450W single-voltage 12.5V DC self-cooled power supply with a closed frame. The AC/DC power converter includes independent connectors for AC input and DC output as well as a DC input connector for backup voltage. The design enables very high electrical efficiency. Current sharing and parallel operations capabilities have been excluded.
Specs for the Open Compute Data Center

Facebook's data center uses an electrical system with a 48V DC UPS system integrated with a 277V AC server power supply.

It has a high-efficiency cooling system that uses the ambient air and evaporated water. Facebook has gotten rid of the centralized chillers.

The battery cabinet is a stand-alone independent cabinet that provides backup power at 48V DC nominal to a pair of triplet racks. This replaces the traditional inline UPS system normally used in data centers.

Open Compute servers are racked into three adjoining 42U columns. Each column contains 30 servers, for a total of 90 servers. One battery cabinet sits between a pair of triplet racks.

The batteries are sealed 12.5V DC nominal high-rate discharge batteries with a 10-year lifespan, the type commonly used in UPS systems. They are connected in a series of four elements for each group, or string, for a nominal string voltage of 48V DC. There are five strings in parallel in the cabinet.
When you Care Enough to Share the Very Best

Facebook says its Prineville data center has a PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) of 1.073, meaning 93 percent of the energy from the grid makes it into its servers. The EPA-defined industry average is 1.51, Facebook says.

PUE is the ratio of the total amount of power used by a data center to the power delivered to computing equipment. It was created by The Green Grid, a global consortium of IT companies whose members include AMD, Dell (Nasdaq: DELL), EMC (NYSE: EMC), HP (NYSE: HPQ), Intel, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL).

Facebook codeveloped the technology used in its data center with Alfa Tech, AMD, Delta, Intel, Power-One and Quanta. It's working with Dell, HP, Rackspace, Skype, Zynga and other companies on the next generation of technologies.

Facebook is publishing the specs and CAD files for the Open Compute project under the Open Web Foundation Agreement Version 1.0. This gives anyone the right to worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free access to use the information.

"Infrastructure isn't what differentiates us and isn't what makes Facebook's business. Opening the technology means there will be advances that we wouldn't have discovered if we had kept this technology secret," said Thaw.

"If we truly look under the covers of this thing, this is Facebook getting vendors to pay for much of their ecosystem in exchange for advocacy," commented Enderle. "Not really a bad idea -- but this isn't Facebook going into the IT business except as an advocate.

While this approach conceals the real cost of the effort because of vendor involvement, he noted, it "can lead to a vastly better solution, although one tightly focused on Facebook."

Microsoft and Toyota mate on smart-grid tech

Toyota motorial has agreed to develop and deploy telematic services, including its smart-grid technology for running electric systems more efficiently, on Microsoft's cloud-based Azure technology.

Toyota wants to use the technology to give customers navigation and diagnostic services, much like General Motors' OnStar service. Toyota also envisions scenarios in which drivers would be able to turn on heaters or air conditioning at their home with voice commands from their car. "We'll boost the value of today's vehicles by making them information terminals," Toyota President Akio Toyoda said at a press conference today, which was Webcast.

The service, a centerpiece of Toyota's green initiative, will provide energy management technology for Toyota's electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2012. Drivers will be able to choose to charge those cars when energy consumption is lowest and prices are cheapest. "We must find a planet-friendly way of using energy," Toyoda said. Toyota hopes to roll out a more advanced platform to handle a wider variety of applications globally by 2015.

The fresh technology will be tested as part of the Toyota Smart Center pilot program, currently running in Japan. The trial gives consumers detailed information about energy consumption in their cars and homes so they can manage their use more efficiently. Toyota has said it believes such smart-grid systems can help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 75 percent.

The deal calls for the two companies to invest a total of $12 million in Toyota Media Service, a Toyota subsidiary that will provide digital information services to Toyota's car customers.

The deal gives Microsoft a marquee customer for its Azure technology, which provides companies the ability to offer applications as a Web-delivered service. And it's not just Toyota that will take advantage of the technology. The car maker intends to open up the service to other developers who could create services of value to drivers. "Getting the platform right opens a lot of opportunities," Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said.

For Microsoft, the deal moves the company further into the automotive business. The software giant has already partnered with Ford for its Sync in-car connectivity system that lets drivers access their phone and music device with voice commands. It also helps Microsoft expand its drive into smart-grid technology. Just Monday at the Fortune Brainstorm Green conference, Microsoft's Chief Environmental Strategist Rob Bernard told CNET that since consumers and utilities have not taken up its Hohm energy-monitoring application as hoped, the company is increasing focus on electric-vehicle charging.

Neither Ballmer nor Toyoda offered up much detail for the kinds of scenarios that might be available. There was some broad discussion about energy-monitoring applications, and some speculation about GPS services that could reroute drivers based on traffic. But whatever is ultimately offered, Toyoda acknowledged that consumers will foot the bill. "To a certain extent, we will have to ask customers to shoulder the expense," Toyoda said.

Toyoda expects the new technology to work in concert with the Entune service, which Toyota unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. That service allows drivers to use voice commands to buy movie tickets, make restaurant reservations, and listen to music. With the technology created by the Microsoft partnership, Toyoda said, "we will be able to offer much broader applications for Entune."

New Oceanic Sub Will 'Fly' to Ocean Depths

The vast arrives at of space aren't humanity's only unexplored regions, and Richard Branson and a group of adventurers are looking in the opposite direction -- toward the deepest trenches in Earth's oceans. Constructed from 8,000 pounds of carbon fiber and titanium, Vigin Oceanic's submarine is the only piloted craft in existence that has "full ocean depth" capability. Branson, et al, plan to take it to its limits in a series of five deep dives.
Space may be the final frontier in many senses of the word, but it's by no means the only one facing mankind. Targeting one of the great mysteries that still exist here on Earth, entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson on Tuesday announced his plans to begin a series of deep-sea explorations through Virgin Oceanic, a brand-new initiative.

In fact, Virgin Oceanic plans to take a solo piloted submarine to the deepest points in each of the world's five oceans in what the company says will be the first time such a feat has ever been attempted.

"Virgin Oceanic will expand the reach of human exploration on our planet," Branson said. "By promoting and utilizing new technology, Virgin Oceanic will aid humankind's ability to explore our Oceans, assist science in understanding our ecosystem, and raise sentience of the challenges facing our Oceans."

Charting New Territory

Working with leading scientific institutions and mapping technology from Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Virgin Oceanic aims to make five dives in five oceans over the course of 2011 and 2012, using the world's only submarine capable of taking a human being to such extreme depths.

As many as 30 Guinness World Records could be set along the way.

Successful the Pacific Ocean, for example, torpedo owner and operator Chris Welsh will dive to the Mariana Trench -- the world's deepest, at 36,201 feet below the surface -- with Branson as backup pilot. Because the sub "flies like an airplane," Welsh will not only be able to reach the deepest point on Earth, but he will be able to "fly" along the bottom of the trench an additional 10 kilometers.

In the Atlantic, Branson himself will pilot to the Puerto Rico Trench, which lies 28,232 feet below the surface and has never been explored before; Welsh will act as backup on that trip.

Additional dives will take place in the Diamantina Trench in the Indian Ocean, South Sandwich Trench in the Southern Ocean and Molloy Deep in the Arctic Ocean.
'The Most Poorly Accessible Habitat on Earth'

Virgin Oceanic's scientific partners include the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the University of Southern California, the University of Hawaii and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. A chart on Flickr illustrates the depths Virgin Oceanic will be exploring.

"From the scientific perspective, my view is that this endeavor offers the opportunity to observe and make measurements in an environment that is otherwise not accessible to human exploration," said Katrina Edwards, director of the Center for Dark Energy Biosphere Investigations at the University of Southern California, who will be focusing on the study of the life that survives and thrives in sediments and rocks at the bottom of the ocean.

"This expedition offers a lens into microbial and other species' diversity at depth in our oceans, the most poorly accessible habitat on earth," Edwards added.
'The Highest Pressure Ecosystems'
Indeed, "it sounds like a really cool project," Steven D'Hondt, professor of oceanography at the University of Rhode Island, told TechNewsWorld. "There's a potential to learn a lot."

In addition to providing a better sense of the diversity of life, the effort could be particularly useful in shedding new light on how "the highest pressure ecosystems differ from lower pressure ones," D'Hondt explained.

A study of microbes adapted to life in the deep ocean's high-pressure conditions, in fact, could potentially even have commercial applications in the long run, he added.
The Flying Sub

Virgin Oceanic's submarine was originally commissioned by record-setting adventurer Steve Fossett, the close friend of Branson's who had intended to complete the first solo dive but then went missing in 2007.

Constructed from 8,000 pounds of carbon fiber and titanium, it is the only piloted craft in existence that has "full ocean depth" capability, Virgin says. It offers an operating depth of 37,000 feet, or seven miles, and is capable of operating for 24 hours unaided.

Once fully descended, the submarine's wing-like hydroplanes and thrusters will allow it to "fly" over the ocean floor while collecting video and data. It will cruise at a maximum of three knots and can dive 350 feet per minute, meaning that the dive to the bottom of the Mariana trench and back is estimated to take about five hours.
'The Last Great Challenge'

Branson's Virgin Galactic initiative to offer space tourism to the paying public already receives regular media attention, and Branson's efforts in that focussing continue unabated, Virgin Oceanic spokesperson Loretta Hidalgo Whitesides told TechNewsWorld.

"Spaceflight is still full speed ahead," Whitesides said.

Rather than replacing Virgin's space-focused quest, then, the new ocean focus is a parallel attempt to unravel some of the many competing mysteries that exist here on our own planet. Less than 3 percent of the sea floor has been explored, according to Virgin Oceanic.

"With space long ago reached by man, and commercial spaceflight tantalizingly close," Branson wrote in a blog post, "the last great challenge for humans is to reach and explore the depths of our planet's oceans."

What pad Wars? The iPad's Competition costs a No-Show

The amounts have come in, and there is a reason the iPad 2 is dwarfing the competition: thither equals none. This follows a flashback to the iPod age. You either had one or you did not. Both devices could play music. Both were portable. In the end though, one lasted until you broke it, and the other only lasted as long as you could put up with it.

Rewriting the Startup Handbook
Starting up a new software company is not very hard, but making it successful requires a willingness to remake old rules to fit the Internet age. Getting venture capital or angel investor funds starts with nailing your story. [Download PDF: 5 pgs | 162k]

The iPad 2 is tough to find these days for some folks. If you have the money, it will eventually end up in your hands, but at a hefty price. What makes this a more glaring issue, though, is the lack of competition.

There's a competition shortage, which reminds me of the evolution of the iPod. Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) had the foresight and demand to effectively buy out the inventory of existing and planned hardware, making the competition wait to even begin to compete. Is this natural event with the iPad 2?

Judging my the shortage of iPad 2 tablets in circulation, it is obvious that Apple did not set out with the purpose of buying all advanced hardware. With a screen size of 9.7 inches, the iPad 2 pretty much stands alone.

Judging by the array of screen sizes of tablets that are flooding the marketplace, it is fair to say that while most don't replicate the iPad 2 screen size, they are close enough in variation to be comparable in this category to the iPad 2.

However, the Motorola (NYSE: MOT) Xoom is the only truly comparable tablet on the market today. Judging by the specs alone, and even at a heftier price, the Xoom seems like a great deal. But digging deeper, there is more to the tablet experience than specs.
Not Fully Baked

The Honeycomb operating system is not quite ready yet. We all know it was upgraded and improved, but this does not tell us anything. Like others have noted, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) is great at beta testing. It's like the website that goes through design changes every three weeks and decides to just leave the "beta" label next to the logo for years.

Eventually, Google will get it right but until then, it will just waste everybody's time. This is a good thing for free software or search results, but for an US$800 tablet, customers might lose some trust.

Just look at the CDMA iPhone 4. Despite years of hype, the sales upon release were met with a bit of a thud. Many Verizon customers have noted that they prefer waiting for the second generation of Verizon iPhones (iPhone 5) before they bite the bullet.

This makes sense, because it gives Apple and Verizon some time to work the kinks out. With the "on the fly" reputation that Google has earned, there is good and bad. In terms of tablet performance, the Honeycomb software comes away tasting bitter.

The issue of Apps is another big one. Windows 7 is having the same problems in the smartphone world because the options are very much limited. We are told that the Xoom will soon catch up, but that is not what potential buyers want to hear before dropping more money on a tablet other than the trusted Apple product.
Apple Retains Value

According to a recent article in eWeek comparing the specs, there was not a noticeable difference between the Xoom and the iPad 2, and the only advantage for the iPad is that it is made by Apple. If someone has never used an Apple product, this may seem like a weak argument for the iPad.

When it comes to longevity of software and hardware though, it should not be discounted at all. The Xoom costs many more straight off, but successful two old age, which product will resell for more? Experience and eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY) tells me the Apple products will always sell for more. Apple engineering is like a fine wine, while the competition can be likened to a keg party: Look cool for a night, clean up the mess tomorrow.
If It Ain't Broke

The original iPad was lacking in a number of features. This helped keep the price down, but it also let Apple effectively work with what it could do well before advancing.

The Xoom and other, ahem, contention Doctor of Osteopathy it the inverse means. They meet a bunch of advanced hardware with a new operating system and hope for the best. They have beta testers who are ready to solve problems, rather than prevent them. They produce glossy numbers and talk like the folks at Apple knowingly made their product slightly inferior, with the presumption the sheep would follow.

We all know this is not true. The numbers have come in, and there is a reason the iPad 2 is dwarfing the competition: There is none. This is a flashback to the iPod age. You either had one or you did not. Both devices could play music. Both were portable. In the end though, one lasted until you broke it, and the other only lasted as long as you could put up with it.

Those of us who have not dropped our "old-school" iPods in water still have them, and we are happy with our determination.

Cree claims LED product price, color solution

A Constructing breakthrough will result in lower costs for better color LEDs, LED manufacturer Cree announced Wednesday.

Cree says it's been able to apply a new method of color mixing to produce an LED light that's akin to an incandescent light bulb in color and uniformity.

The LED light uses 4 watts of power while offering 340 lumens at 3,000 degrees Kelvin (warm white) and operating at a temperature of 85 degrees Celsius.

The LEDs are intended for use in fixtures that would normally take a 20- to 25-watt halogen bulb, such as track lighting, picture lights, projection light fixtures, and chandeliers.

LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are essentially silicon chips that produce light and are more energy efficient that CFL or incandescent lighting. But they have been hampered by the fact that they do not naturally produce white light, but rather a blue-ish light. To get them to glow white, or other colors, is an expensive production. That passed cost makes them more expensive to consumers than the average comparable incandescent or CFL light bulb. It's also been a challenge for manufacturers to mass-produce LEDs at a guaranteed wavelength consistently, despite coming from the same manufacturing batch.

"The XM-L EasyWhite LED is available in 2-step color points, which is the industry's tightest LED-to-LED color consistency offering, replicating the uniformity of incandescent light bulbs. Available in high-CRI options, XM-L EasyWhite LEDs are binned at 85 degrees Celsius to provide a single bin per color temperature. XM-L EasyWhite LEDS are also available in either a 6-volt or a high-voltage 12-volt configuration, which enables the use of efficient, small and low-cost drivers," according to Cree.

(Credit: Cree)

The company has not announced specialised pricing for clients, but seems to be positioning itself to make a major push in LED light fixtures.

Earlier this week, Cree signed a comprehensive cross-licensing agreement with German LED giant Osram. The deal will result in the cross-licensing of key patents from each company's patent portfolio, regarding white LEDs and phosphors, as well as, LED luminaires, lamps, and lighting control systems, according to Cree.

Osram is best known for its recent lighting of the giant Christ the Redeemer Statue on Mount Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with more than 300 LED projection light fixtures.

Cree is not the only one to claim an LED breakthrough. All the leading LED companies have been striving to make cheaper and less color-restrictive LEDs for use in lighting, as well as electronics, with varying results. The string of breakthroughs in design and manufacturing has resulted in manufacturing costs slowly coming down.

Research analyst Pike Research reported in May 2010, that 46 percent of the $4.4 billion commercial lighting business will be in LED lighting by 2020.

Most notable was the 2009 LED breakthrough by scientists at Seoul National University in Korea. The group engineered a molecule with one orange and one blue light-emitting material, a two-step color point process that, when put together, resulted in producing a white LED light.

iOS 4.3, Planned For Friday, Available Now

Even with its mobile devices flying off the shelves, Apple needs to keep its competitive edge and iOS 4.3 is part of that strategy. A January survey showed that as of last November iOS was still the leading operating system in the US but losing ground to Google's Android. So, the release of new features in iOS 4.3 is critical. Two days before the release of the new iPad Relevant Products/Services, Apple launched the latest version of its mobile operating system Relevant Products/Services earlier than expected.

iOS 4.3, originally set for Friday, will allow AT&T's iPhone users to access Relevant Products/Services the personal Wi-Fi hotspot feature that Verizon Wireless users received off the bat when the CDMA version became available in January. But the update which includes faster browsing via a new Nitro JavaScript engine, won't reach Verizon iPhone users until later this year.

More Sharing And Streaming

Other 4.3 features include iTunes Home Sharing, allowing users to stream their iTunes libraries to any iOS device Relevant Products/Services via a shared Wi-Fi network; the ability to stream content from any compatible app to an Apple TV set-top device via AirPlay; and iPad side switch customization, which allows users to choose whether the mechanical side switch is used as a volume mute button or to lock the screen rotation.

Many of the features were displayed by Apple's CEO Steve Jobs on March 2, when he came out of medical leave to show off the iPad 2, the first device to ship with 4.3 and not require the update. Users of the iPhone 3GS or 4, original iPad or the two most recent versions of the iPod touch can go to Apple's web site now, connect their device and click on check for updates.

If you haven't updated your iOS in a while, 4.3 will also include past additions, such as Air Print -- the ability to send photos from mobile device to stationary printer Relevant Products/Services -- drag and drop folders and the remote device finder, which also allows remote passcode setting.

The update follows the Tuesday release of iTunes version 10.2.1, which iOS users will need to get the new firmware.

Why Wait?

Apple likely released the update early simply because it saw no reason to hold it once the finishing touches were complete, said mobile devices analyst Avi Greengart of Current Analysis.

"It's software, so there are no channel issues to launch timetables, you just post it on your site," said Greengart

Even with its mobile devices flying off the shelves, Apple needs to keep its competitive edge. A January survey Relevant Products/Services by market research firm Nielsen Group showed that as of last November iOS was still the leading operating system in the United States but losing ground to Google's Android, which is available on numerous devices and tablets and sold by many carriers.

Just two months later, Nielsen found that in the intervening period, through January, Apple was tied with Research in Motion's BlackBerry for second place, at 27 percent each, with Android seizing the lead with 29 percent of active smartphones. (That was before Apple released the iPhone for Verizon Wireless.)

One potential point of concern for Apple is that new smartphone Relevant Products/Services adopters, those ages 18-34, were found to be more likely to choose an Android phone.

how voip business helps your business

After the global recession American business industry has been virtually reduced to a fraction of its former glory. Unemployment, forced closures, mortgage and bills have made income vs. expense ratio uneven. The global downturn has even affected some of the names in the market. In this chaos every one looks for something that is cost effective; can’t really say about the rest but one constant that is sure to deliver is the internet based business phone system.

No one is stranger to internet communication it is one of the most growing communication medium in the world. In few short years it has developed in to a billion dollar industry and is growing with a pace like no other. It initially started of with home users and later started catering the business industry. Rather it is the only communication which truly defines business as a separate entity and has come up with a calling package. For any one who has little connection or affiliation with the VoIP industry success stories of Business phones are countless but for anyone still unaware. Let this article be a torch bearer into a world of communication.

VoIP business phone

As mentioned earlier internet telephony is not a new concept it has been there for quite some time; thus it has evolved and matured to great extent. It understands what is needed by a business and how it can be benefited by simply changing a calling service. In any business telephone is an essential component; it is one of the most used medium for routine work. An Internet business phone comprises of following attributes that make it beneficiary to a larger extent.

Affordable rates: Every business is tainted by the amount of bills it has to pay regarding the calls it make. VoIP business phones give rates that are a fraction of those provided by traditional phones. VoIP services introduced numerous calling plans so that a small or medium sized business can select one according to its needs. With VoIP phones one only needs to pay for what he uses no extra over heads.

Calling Experience: initially many critics had doubts regarding the voice quality offered by VoIP service providers; but with time this drawback has been over come. Now many companies provide exceptional flawless voice quality. Also every calling package has many different features added in it which adds up to the calling experience.

Number portability and freedom: freedom and number portability fall under the same category because number portability is an extension of the later. Previously business phones lacked maneuverability and freedom; a user was bound to the length of the wire and the code of the area. But with these new internet business phones not only one can move any where, but also select multiple devices to act as separate phones with same number. Also one can change from any where to a service which they like or suite them the most. One can even go to a different state and stay use the same number.

Conclusion: a VoIP based business phone system lets a user take its business in any and every direction. Your aim and ambition is what guides a VoIP phone.
